Hippotheraphy and Equine Assisted Therapy
Available throughout Scotland ..
Quite simply put, hippotherapy is physiotherapy on a horse.
It can help move and challenge the body’s balance and stability reactions, improve your child’s postural control and strengthen core muscles without them even realising it, in a fun-filled session!
Let the horses’ transitions from walk, trot and halt engage muscles throughout the body in a rhythm that mimics our own walking pattern. Hippotherapy uses the characteristic movements of a horse to provide carefully graded motor and sensory input.
We assess the conformation of a horse and the way the horse moves going forward, then match it to the postural and strengthening needs of the young person.
The physiotherapy benefits brought about by this, paired with experiencing a connection with the horse is a fantastic movement opportunity for our young people. They do require adequate sitting balance and a love for animals!
“My son is a wheelchair user and as a result of his condition in the last 2-3 years he has been experiencing significant difficulties with muscle tone and tightness in his legs. This impacts on his core stability, movement and results in debilitating back pain. Post therapy he is stronger in his core, his back pain has lessened and he can now use his upper body to do things he was unable to previously do” Morven Howell, Ayrshire.
